Honda Pilot vs Mazda CX-9 Engine Power & Performance
Despite their similar stature and presence, these respective SUVs have very different engines under their hoods. The 2019 Honda Pilot comes equipped with the 3.5-liter V6 engine with Variable Cylinder Management™. This feature aids the vehicle in efficiency by using half the cylinders during routine performance. The Pilot engine is capable of producing 280 horsepower.
The CX-9 includes a 2.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. This engine maxes out its output at just 250 horsepower—giving the Pilot a 30 horsepower lead. When properly equipped, the CX-9 can tow 3,500 pounds–but the Pilot takes it further with 5,000 pounds when properly equipped.
Cabin Space & Cargo Capacity
Each SUV offers an expansive cabin with three rows of seating. The Pilot offers more headroom with 40.1 inches in the front and 40.2 inches in the middle row. The Mazda CX-9 only offers its front row passengers 39.3 inches of headroom and 38.5 inches of legroom for passengers in the middle.
There’s a pretty significant difference in the amount of cargo space offered by these SUVs. The Mazda CX-9 only features 14.4 cubic feet of cargo space while the Pilot includes 16.5 cubic feet. When the third rows are folded flat, the Pilot cargo space expands to 46.8 cubic feet and the CX-9 broadens to just 38.2 cubic feet. When the last two rows are folded, the Pilot offers 83.9 cubic feet and the CX-9 offers just 71.2 cubic feet.
The Honda Pilot and Mazda CX-9 each include some driver-assisting technology systems that utilize exterior sensors to measure the speed and distance to not only provide you with a warning, but also to mitigate the collision by using slight brake pressure to reduce the severity of the collision or help you avoid it entirely. Each vehicle includes pre-collision systems, but the Pilot also adds Road Departure Mitigation System and Adaptive Cruise Control with Low-Speed Follow.
